Hard work was only half the formula.
I grew up in a small Massachusetts town that didn't have a single stoplight. I'm the middle of three kids, and both my parents were schoolteachers. As most of you know, teachers don't make a ton of money, but my parents were determined to give us a better life than they'd had. My dad worked four jobs and my mom worked two jobs - they did this so my siblings and I could have opportunities they never got.
What I learned from watching them was simple: work hard. It took me years to see that was only half the lesson.
2020 was a difficult year for a lot of families, and it was difficult for me and my family. I lost multiple family members, my dad among them. Until then I hadn't understood how exposed we were. Then we were scrambling to find $10,000 to give him a proper burial. Every dollar he earned had gone to us, and nothing had been set up to keep working for the family once he was gone.
That was the missing piece. He knew how to work hard, but nobody ever taught him how to make his money work for him.
Around that time, a friend of mine asked me what millionaires have in common. His answer was real estate. That right there - lightbulb moment.
You don't know what you don't know. I thought investing in real estate meant I needed to save up money and buy something. So that's what I did.
I bought a triplex. I renovated it with YouTube tutorials and a few friends I paid in pizza and beer. I loved it, so I bought a duplex. Then I got my share of landlord horror stories. I figured there had to be a better way, and then I found it in multifamily syndication, where I built ownership in 574 units.
That chapter taught me how to scale, but it's behind me now. Today my focus is Terra Nova and HelixMD. On the real estate side, that means land development and acquisitions only. I no longer do multifamily deals.
The hard work these past years came at a cost. I was working so hard that I stopped paying attention to my body, and eventually I got hurt. A friend introduced me to peptide therapy.
It changed how I recovered, and then it changed how I think about health. I started training, sleeping and eating like they mattered. My body changed, my head got clearer, and my business got better too.
I also saw what's wrong with the peptide world. A lot of it is gray market, and people inject things without knowing where they came from or what's really in the vial. That's why I co-founded HelixMD: licensed physicians, licensed U.S. pharmacies, and no guessing.
